The reasons for undergoing LASIK are very personal, but are shared by many patients: to better see the faces of loved ones, to advance in one’s career, to be able to participate in sports, to feel better about one’s appearance - the list goes on and on. It is of great importance that our Lake County LASIK patients thoroughly consider the benefits and risks of laser vision correction surgery. The biggest concern among our patients is whether they will achieve perfect vision without the aid of contact lenses or eyeglasses. Another common concern among our patients is the LASIK recovery process. Fortunately, the vast majority of our patients heal relatively quickly, while also seeing an instant improvement in their vision. For a small few, the LASIK recovery process takes longer.

Every Lake County, Indiana vision center patient undergoing LASIK surgery first receives an evaluation to ensure that he or she is a good candidate. While we cannot make any guarantees of the final outcome, by first determining whether you’re a good candidate, there is a higher chance of an easy and pain-free LASIK recovery process.

The LASIK Recovery Process

While the recovery process is unique to each patient, there are common symptoms experienced by some patients immediately after LASIK surgery:

The LASIK Recovery Process: Aftercare Instructions

We recommend that you rest your eyes for a few hours immediately following your LASIK surgery to ensure optimal results. We also recommend that you refrain from watching television or from engaging in activities that may cause eye strain for at least one day after surgery. The easiest way to achieve this is by going home and taking a long nap.

Following surgery, many patients experience a strong desire to rub their eyes. It is essential that you do not rub your eyes for at least a week. To ensure that your eyes are protected while you are asleep, you will be given eye shields to wear. These shields may be worn for one to two days after your surgery. Eye products should be completely avoided for two weeks after the LASIK procedure.

Patients can expect a follow-up appointment to take place one to two days after the surgery has been completed. Your LASIK treatment package includes all pre-operative and post-operative care for one year. During the first year after your surgery you will be monitored to ensure proper healing. After surgery, you will be given eye drops and detailed aftercare instructions. Most patients experience minimal discomfort after surgery. This discomfort can usually be controlled through the use of over-the-counter pain relievers.

Lake County, Indiana LASIK patients are not allowed to drive themselves home. Though your vision will most likely be improved almost immediately following your LASIK procedure, you will be required to have someone drive for you for at least one day. The majority of our Lake County LASIK patients are able to resume driving the day after their surgery.
